THE STORY SO FAR...
June 1990:
This was a Volkshochschule (VHS) Gilching Adult Education
Course - 2 weeks on the Greek Islands of Lesbos and Chios “Learning
to See Photographically”. Lots of good motifs, food, wine and fun
with 12 super people who still keep in touch. Later, in Gilching, we had
an exhibition
of the participants work
1991-1992:
A series of VHS winter workshops; in Herrsching on the Ammersee.
These were devoted to black and white photography, and included instruction
on the Ansel Adams Zone System, and Darkroom work.
January 1993:
At the Hasselblad University in Hamburg; A new series
of workshops, with guest lecturers organized by Hasselblad Germany.
I did the first one specialising in black & white with Ansel Adams’s
Zone System and Hasselblad’s new camera, the 205 TCC. Of the 15 participants,
including professional photographers, none had ever used the Zone System. We did two days
of practical work including film development.
June 1995:
In Massa Marittima, Tuscany; at the Toscana Foto Festival. A
delightful week on an old wine estate. I shared this event as Guest Lecturer
with Grande Maestro Franco Fontana. We did lots of photography and practical darkroom
work in black and white. Participants still meet and relive this super
workshop!
November 1995:
Another Hasselblad Workshop, this time for the
photo-group AKF, in Nymphenburg Munich. This was well supported (15
participants) and - like the Hamburg workshop - it included practical
work with Adams’s Zone
System, film developing and printing. The theme was “Fine Art Photography”,
and I concentrated on archival processing methods and presentation.
I repeated these workshops several times for the AKF and local photo-clubs,
but
with the rise of digital imaging interest in Fine Art Printing has waned...
Over the years I’ve run several VHS-Further Education Courses on “Learning to See”, and for the Bavarian Farmers Association - too many to write about here.
In 2003 I spent a quite intensive weekend in Austria conducting a workshop on behalf of Burkhardt Kiegeland (of Lotus Camera fame) in an Art festival run by Burghausen city. All of these workshops were conducted in German. I’m looking forward to doing these someday in my “mother tongue” English - any offers?
However, as the years go by, I now prefer to do private “one-on-one” workshops in my own darkroom.
Nevertheless in July of 2004 together with three photo-friends,
we held a two day event in Wessling. It included
workshops, portfolio shows, equipment demonstrations by firms specializing
in state-of-the-art digital printing - and discussion groups led by
acknowledged Gurus. I contributed with
two oversubscribed workshops just talking about black & white photography
and how to see. The whole weekend was judged by the many participants
to have been a great success, but for the four of us it was a test of moral and
physical strength not to be repeated...
